Our verdict

Our verdict

If your business involves physical goods, manufacturing, or warehousing, RAKEZ is one of the best free zones in the UAE. No other zone offers this combination of affordable pricing, real industrial facilities, and flexible visa packages. For businesses that need a place to store, build, or ship physical products, RAKEZ delivers what Dubai-based free zones cannot.

The trade-off is location. Ras Al Khaimah is about 1 to 1.5 hours from central Dubai, which makes it less convenient for client meetings or networking. If your business is purely service-based, consulting, or digital, you will get better value from IFZA, Meydan, or another Dubai-focused zone. RAKEZ is built for operations, not optics.

Our recommendation:If you're running a business that needs warehouse space, manufacturing facilities, or industrial land at an affordable price, RAKEZ is the clear winner. If you're a service business, freelancer, or digital startup, look at IFZA or Meydan instead.

Best for
βœ“Manufacturing and industrial businesses
βœ“Trading companies needing warehouse space
βœ“E-commerce businesses with physical inventory
βœ“Logistics and supply chain operations
βœ“Businesses needing affordable land or facilities
Not ideal for
βœ•Service-based businesses and consultants
βœ•Digital nomads and remote freelancers
βœ•Businesses needing a Dubai address for prestige
βœ•Client-facing firms that require regular meetings in Dubai
βœ•Businesses where location reputation matters more than facilities
Background

What is RAKEZ?

RAKEZ (Ras Al Khaimah Economic Zone) was formed in 2017 through the merger of two established entities: RAK Free Trade Zone and RAK Investment Authority. It operates across two main areas: Al Hamra Industrial Zone and Al Ghail Industrial Zone, both located in the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah.

Unlike most UAE free zones that focus on office-based businesses, RAKEZ was purpose-built for industrial and manufacturing operations. It offers warehouses, open land plots, factory shells, and industrial facilities that you simply cannot find at zones like IFZA, Meydan, or even DMCC. This makes it uniquely suited for businesses that handle physical goods.

RAKEZ hosts over 15,000 companies from more than 100 countries. While it does offer virtual office and service-based licences, its real strength is the industrial infrastructure. If your business plan involves making, storing, or shipping physical products, RAKEZ provides the facilities at a fraction of what comparable Dubai-based options would cost.

RAKEZ is a Ras Al Khaimah free zone. Your trade licence will say β€œRas Al Khaimah,” not β€œDubai.” For most international clients this makes no difference, but it is worth knowing if Dubai jurisdiction specifically matters to your business.

+Visa processing ~$1,500 – ~$2,000/person
+Medical fitness test ~$80 – ~$120/person
+Emirates ID ~$100 – ~$300/person
+Health insurance ~$500/yr – ~$1,200/yr
+Warehouse lease ~$3,000/yr – ~$15,000/yr

Realistic Year 1 total (starter, 1 visa)

RAKEZ Starter Package$4,200
Visa processing (1 person)$1,800
Medical + Emirates ID$350
Health insurance$700
Misc (PRO, typing, bank)$400
Realistic Year 1 Total~$7,450

Year 2 renewal: ~$3,500 – ~$4,500(licence + insurance). Lower than Year 1 because you don't repeat the initial visa processing or setup fees.

At ~$7,450, RAKEZ's realistic Year 1 cost is roughly half the cost of a comparable Dubai free zone package. The savings come from Ras Al Khaimah's lower operating costs, which RAKEZ passes on to licence holders. If you also need warehouse space, the savings are even greater compared to Dubai alternatives like DWC or JAFZA.

Setup

How to set up in RAKEZ: step by step

Honest assessment

RAKEZ pros and cons: the honest assessment

What RAKEZ does well
βœ“Real warehouse and industrial facilities available
βœ“Affordable pricing starting at ~$4,200/year
βœ“Wide range of permitted business activities
βœ“Flexible visa packages from 1 to 6+ visas
βœ“Simple and straightforward renewal process
βœ“Factory shells and open land plots available
βœ“15,000+ registered companies across 100+ countries
βœ“Lower operating costs than any Dubai-based free zone
Where RAKEZ falls short
βœ•Ras Al Khaimah is 1-1.5 hours from central Dubai
βœ•Less prestigious than Dubai-based free zones
βœ•Smaller business community than DMCC or IFZA
βœ•Banking can be slower with a RAK free zone licence
βœ•Not ideal for client-facing service businesses
βœ•Limited networking and community events compared to Dubai zones
βœ•RAK jurisdiction may matter for some industries

RAKEZ's trade-off is the opposite of DMCC's: you sacrifice location prestige for affordable industrial facilities. For businesses where physical operations matter more than a Dubai address, that trade-off makes complete sense.

RAKEZ vs IFZA

IFZA is better for service businesses, freelancers, and digital startups that don't need physical facilities. RAKEZ is better if your business requires warehouse space, manufacturing, or industrial operations. IFZA processes faster, but RAKEZ offers facilities that IFZA simply cannot provide. Choose IFZA for services; choose RAKEZ for physical goods.

RAKEZ vs DWC

DWC (Dubai World Central) offers warehouse and logistics facilities in Dubai, but at roughly ~$5,000 more per year than RAKEZ. Choose DWC if you need a Dubai jurisdiction and proximity to Al Maktoum Airport. Choose RAKEZ if cost matters more than a Dubai address and you can work from Ras Al Khaimah.

RAKEZ vs JAFZA

JAFZA (Jebel Ali Free Zone) is the premium choice for large-scale trading and logistics, with direct access to Jebel Ali Port. It costs significantly more than RAKEZ, starting at ~$12,000. Choose JAFZA for high-volume port logistics. Choose RAKEZ if you need affordable industrial facilities without the JAFZA premium.

Ongoing costs

Renewal costs and what to expect after Year 1

After your first year, RAKEZ requires annual licence renewal. Start the process 2-3 weeks before your expiry date. Late renewal incurs penalties and can affect your visa status.

ItemApprox. Cost
Licence renewal$2,500 – $3,500
Health insurance renewal$500 – $1,200
Accounting (corporate tax)$500 – $1,000
Warehouse lease (if applicable)$3,000 – $15,000
Annual ongoing total (no warehouse)~$3,500 – ~$4,500

RAKEZ's renewal costs are among the lowest in the UAE. If you add a warehouse lease, your total will vary based on facility size and type. The licence renewal itself is straightforward and can be completed online through the RAKEZ portal.
